The Master of Public Health (MPH) program provides students with the rigorous academic skills, practical experience and multidisciplinary studies that will enable them to meet the public health challenges of the 21st century.
All MPH degree students (except those in the COPHP program) take six courses as a cohort in the first year of study. These courses address foundational competencies required for the degree. Students will also complete required courses as defined by their area of interest.
The MPH Core Program Team includes a Director, Program Manager, and instructor teams for each of the courses.

Instructor teams from different disciplines will use student-centered learning strategies, with compelling case studies and engaging pedagogy. Across the core curriculum, students will focus on ethics and equity issues; global and local perspectives; communication, systems thinking, leadership and collaborative skills; and the evidence-to-action-and-back cycle.
In addition to completing the PHI course series, students will also meet their Interprofessional Education Experience (IPE) in the MPH Core. The IPE Core Curriculum is where students will learn foundational teamwork skills alongside future colleagues from across the health professions. The three-part IPE Core Curriculum is aimed at developing a foundational understanding of other health professionals’ roles and responsibilities, and the skills needed to effectively collaborate with a diverse healthcare team. The curriculum is designed to give students an intentional and step-wise introduction to IPE and collaborative practice, while helping them to meet their programs’ accreditation requirements for IPE. There are three parts to this curriculum that take place over the academic year outside of class time. Additional information will be provided to students in autumn quarter.
The new MPH Common Core courses are listed in the following table. Please note, there are two track options for Autumn Quarter.
- NUTR students must take Track Option A (PHI 512)
- EPI students must take Track Option B (BIOST 511/EPI 512)
- All other in-residence MPH students may choose which option to take
