Weyerhaeuser has an immediate opening for a Facility Environmental Technician supporting Longview operations.  The person in this role will be responsible for supporting environmental fieldwork at the facility.  Duties include maintaining systems necessary to ensure compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations and permit conditions, maintain best practices to improve facility performance and support all environmental operating plans, records, and programs.   This position partners with the Facility Environmental Manager and the operation’s leadership team to establish and model behavior that leads to excellent performance. This position reports to the Regional Environmental Manager.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work safely, and in full compliance with the facility’s safety plans, policies and practices.
  • Role model all standards/processes and on-the-job behavior by living our core values of Safety, Integrity, Citizenship, Sustainability and Inclusion.
  • Be accountable for compliance with environmental regulations and permit conditions on a daily basis.
  • Ensure that inspections and recordkeeping are performed at required frequencies, and that environmental monitoring parameters comply with permits, plans, government regulations, or other regulatory or company requirements.
  • Build relationships with regulatory agencies concerning environmental compliance and work with them to influence regulatory outcomes.
  • Build relationships with production leaders, managers, supervisors, and associates to influence environmental best practices.
  • Ensure proper and timely implementation of facility environmental plans and procedures.
  • Resolve environmental upsets with the facility managers, regional environmental manager, appropriate regulatory agencies, and other appropriate company environmental contacts.
  • Support and/or lead facility environmental compliance audits at the facility.
  • Maintain environmental records at the facility for mandatory retention periods or as determined appropriate.
  • Assist with environmental training for all facility employees as required.
  • Establish and model organizational behavior.
  • Participate as an active member of the regional environmental team to support environmental efforts, train on new or changing regulatory matters, and share best management practices.
  • Management of consultants ensuring quality, cost-effective service. 

Skills/Eligibility:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) from an accredited institution in an appropriate scientific or engineering field or equivalent with 3-5 years’ experience, including 2 years’ environmental experience.  Alternatively, an associate degree combined with general work experience and at least 3 years’ environmental experience may be acceptable.   
  • Strong understanding of applicable environmental requirements and permits, including air, water and solid waste requirements, storm water, spill prevention and control, hazardous materials, and chemical management.
  • Ability to research, read, interpret, and apply local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
  • Understands compliance management systems.
  • Understands the environmental compliance audit/inspection process and ability to complete an internal/external audit/inspection.
  • Project management skills which include the ability to develop and implement environmental processes.
  • Proven skills in administering and managing environmental policies and regulatory requirements and providing related training.
  • Strong, engaging, people-centered leadership style.
  • Proactive, assertive and ability to work with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work under pressure and commitment to organize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal and electronic communication skills. 
  • Strong planning and organizational skills. Ability to lead and promote teamwork, and efficiently plan work schedule. 
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills and proficiency in MS Office and other windows-based programs.
  • Willingness to support 24/7 operating environments, which may include weekend and holiday support as conditions require.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of working in an industrial environment, such as climbing stairs and working in extreme heat and cold.
