Under general direction of the Employee Health & Safety Manager, the Safety Technician provides support to various health and safety programs and functions to ensure that it is effective in practice and in alignment with Safety Management System (SMS) principles, including PPE, first aid kits, and ergonomics; assists multiple staff, supports committee administration for the Employee Safety Committee including meeting minutes; administers the Employee Reporting Safety Tool and responds to questions, inquiries, and requests for status of corrective actions. Prepares reports, presentations, materials, and correspondence as assigned; works with Senior Health & Safety Specialists and Health & Safety Specialist as directed; and provides administrative and technical support to the Employee Health & Safety (EHS) Group.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Provides support to health and safety programs and functions for all Agency employees and coordinates with various workgroups.
  • Supports the agency PPE program, including provisioning and distribution to all employees.
  • Supports the first aid kit provisioning across all agency offices and facilities.
  • Supports the office ergonomic program, including conducting office ergonomic assessments/consultations for on-site employees and remote workers.
  • Addresses and elevates employee health and safety concerns that are reported to the EHS Group and serves as a liaison between the EHS Group and the Employee Safety Committee.
  • Provides support to the Employee Health & Safety Manager, Senior Health & Safety Specialists, and Health & Safety Specialist on matters as directed; participates on a variety of committees as assigned; attends and participates in professional group meetings; maintains awareness of new trends and developments in the fields related to area of assignment; ensures processes, policies, and practices are interpreted and applied consistently and effectively; ensures accountability and compliance with all current and applicable state and federal laws, Agency policies and procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Supports the safety onboarding training program. 
  • Provides administrative support to the Division staff, as assigned.
  • Provides meeting administration such as coordinating schedules and drafting materials including summaries. Drafts and coordinates review and approval of meeting materials and presentations including agendas, handouts, and summaries. Maintains accurate documentation and files.
  • Prepares reports requested by leadership, committee assignments, other Agency departments/divisions or external entities.
  • Enters data into Safety databases and develops safety database reports, as assigned.
  • Supports inventory tracking, ordering, and invoice processing.
  • Administers department document control in accordance with agency policies.

Skills/Eligibility:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field; Three years of experience performing safety tasks and safety oversight in a complex organization or public agency; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:  

  • Valid state driver’s license. Position is responsible for transporting bulk PPE and first aid kit supplies to multiple locations including construction offices not serviced by the transportation system.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Methods and techniques used in the performance of safety duties and responsibilities.
  • Mandated safety program rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Understanding technical and/or industry concepts of safety management.
  • Communication techniques to respond to complex inquiries, including routing information to and from appropriate staff member(s).
  • Principles of business letter writing, research, and basic report preparation.
  • Basic document control principles.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Techniques to work effectively under pressure.
  • Methods to manage workload, meet deadlines, and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Using computers and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, management, contractors, vendors, and outside agencies.
  • Collecting, evaluating, and interpreting information and data from multiple sources.
  • Maintaining confidentiality while communicating with tact and diplomacy.
  • Using information retrieval systems to extract data to produce reports.
  • Creating and maintaining databases as needed.
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
